Zion National Park
Utah
Most RVs and trailers can no longer use the Zion–Mt. Carmel Highway
- Since June 7, 2026, vehicles over any of these limits may not drive the Zion–Mt. Carmel Highway between Canyon Junction and the East Entrance: 35′ 9″ long, 7′ 10″ wide, 11′ 4″ tall or 50,000 lb.
- Truck-and-trailer combinations are limited to 50′ overall, with the trailer no longer than 26′ from hitch to rear axle.
- Measurements include mirrors, tires, A/C units, bike racks, satellite dishes and other attachments. That width limit rules out most RVs: in RV Sort’s 2027 catalog, every Class A, nearly every fifth wheel and about 80% of travel trailers and Class C motorhomes are already 7′ 10″ or wider before mirrors. Most Class B camper vans are narrower.
- Oversize vehicles entering from the South Entrance can still use the large-vehicle lot at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center (when space is available), stay at Watchman or South Campground, visit Zion Lodge with a reservation, or drive the Scenic Drive when the shuttle isn’t running.
- The park says alternate routes to Bryce Canyon and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon add 10 to 45 minutes.

Glacier National Park
Montana
Going-to-the-Sun Road: 21 feet long and 8 feet wide, maximum
- Between Avalanche Creek and Rising Sun, vehicles and vehicle combinations longer than 21′ (including bumpers) or wider than 8′ (including mirrors) are prohibited.
- Vehicles over 10′ tall may have difficulty driving west from Logan Pass to the Loop because of rock overhangs.
- Larger RVs can still reach both ends of the road (Avalanche Creek from the west, Rising Sun from the east). A truck towing even a small trailer will usually exceed 21′ combined.

Common questions
What is the RV length limit in national parks?
There is no single limit. Each park sets its own rules for specific roads, parking areas and campgrounds. The tightest common limits are 21 feet on Glacier’s Going-to-the-Sun Road and Yosemite’s Mariposa Grove Road, 22 to 23 feet on several roads in Sequoia, Grand Teton and Bryce Canyon, and 25 feet on Rocky Mountain’s Old Fall River Road and Death Valley’s Artists Drive.
Does the length limit include my tow vehicle?
Usually, yes. Glacier, Yosemite and Zion all count vehicle combinations, and Grand Canyon treats a vehicle and trailer over 22 feet total as oversized. A 20-foot trailer behind a pickup is typically more than 35 feet overall.
Do width limits include mirrors?
Yes, where the park says so. Glacier measures 8 feet including mirrors, Zion measures 7 feet 10 inches including mirrors and other attachments, and Yosemite’s Hetch Hetchy limit is 8 feet mirror to mirror.
Can I take an RV through the Zion tunnel?
Only if every dimension is within Zion’s limits: 35′ 9″ long, 7′ 10″ wide, 11′ 4″ tall and 50,000 lb, or 50′ overall with a trailer no longer than 26′ hitch to rear axle. Since June 7, 2026, larger vehicles may not use the highway between Canyon Junction and the East Entrance.
This guide summarizes rules published by the National Park Service for planning purposes. Park rules, closures and reservation systems change; the park’s own website and posted signs always take precedence. See our terms of use.
